The National March for Life—Vicki Layman…The National March for Life in Washington D.C. is held each year to protest on the anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s Roe vs. Wade decision legalizing abortion in the United States on January 22, 1973.  The local Allen County March is held for the same reason, and members of our Fort Wayne Chapter of Lutherans for Life have marched in this one for years, as well as fellow Lutherans from CLHS, the seminary and local Lutheran churches. Washington DC March for Life Rally Attracts Hundreds of Thousands

march

The annual March for Life Rally, was held in Washington, DC on Friday, January 22nd. Held on the 37th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion, protesters turned out by the hundreds of thousands to march to the Supreme Court. By many accounts it was the largest demonstration in years.

What was especially encouraging was the fact that this year huge numbers of youth were present. In fact, it appeared that the majority of protesters were young.

Pro-abortionists are worried, as they realize that there is a very real chance that Roe v. Wade may be overturned. In the January 24th Washington Post, pro-abortion columnist Robert McCartney wrote:

I went to the March for Life rally Friday on the Mall expecting to write about its irrelevance. Isn’t it quaint, I thought, that these abortion protesters show up each year on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, even though the decision still stands after 37 years.

…How wrong I was. The antiabortion movement feels it’s gaining strength, even if it’s not yet ready to predict ultimate triumph, and Roe supporters (including me) are justifiably nervous.

…In this case, I was especially struck by the large number of young people among the tens of thousands at the march.

…Activists who support abortion rights conceded that there’s less energy among young people on their side of the debate.

…”Unfortunately, I feel my generation is a little complacent,” said Amanda Pelletier, 20, co-director of the abortion rights group at American University. “It just doesn’t seem to be a very hip issue.”

Lest anyone insist that the pro-life movement is strictly a religious issue, note that even atheists have their own anti-abortion movement, as seen in a January 28, 2008 article in Newsweek Magazine and at the Atheist and Agnostic Pro-Life League website, found at http://www.godlessprolifers.org/home.html.

As medical science continues to progress it becomes apparent to even non-Christians that an embryo is a human life and that, as such, people do not have the right to end that life.

Baby Safe HavenAbandoned Infant Protection LawABOUT SAVE HAVENEvery day newborn babies are abandoned by their desperate mothers, but thankfully there is a way to avoid these tragedies.  Safe Haven Infant Protection Laws are designed to give parents in crisis a way to give up an unwanted infant safely, legally and anonymously.  As long as the baby has not been abused, the person may do so without fear of arrest or prosecution.  Since the first safe-haven law was enacted in Texas in 1999, all U.S. states, as well as the District of Columbia, have passed safe-haven legislation, and every state has reported lives saved through the existence of these laws.  Due to less-than-perfect reporting methods, we are unsure of the exact number but know that in the past decade, these laws have saved well over 1,000 infants.  (more…)
